Annea Lockwood, a composer of soundscapes, including those found in nature, describes this phenomenon as “listening with”. Sound as a shared experience and energy channel that deeply connects us with fellow organisms in our environment. Listening With Trees captures a conversation with trees. The wind was a material that enveloped and affected both my body and the trees’ bodies in similar swaying ways, and provided a medium to connect and convey our transmissions. I built a long string aeolian harp, connecting my body to some of the last surviving trees in East River Park, a dialogue I engaged in several times over many weeks. Some days were quieter than others, and some generated ethereal and strange sounds. Likewise, weaving textiles and their iconographies is a way to remember...”&nbsp;Sabina Aguilera Drawing inspiration from the woven language of Anni Albers and Shelia Hicks while exploring indigenous ontologies, guided me in weaving a conversation with trees. A visual and tactile study made alongside my sound research, Listening With Trees.&nbsp; Contrasting the planned nature of weaving there was room for uncertainty — each row revealing the conversation one stitch at a time. The reverse side of the weaving reveals the many threads, a sort of mycelial and conversational residue. My transformation of this method provided a mechanism to tune into another species’ dimension.&nbsp;Slow-Scan Transmissions speculates on messages sent from trees to humans. Glyphs are formed by the space between trees in conversation. Ligatures that shift with seasons and growth are ephemeral as the clouds, but they also recombine in recognizable patterns. A video visualization features the tree crowns swaying (their branches becoming rivers and arteries in the sky) layered with a slow-scan reveal of the glyphs. Field recordings of biophonic conversation amongst trees, birds, and peat moss knit together in an audio soundtrack. The work speaks to this loss, as the sound of the recording degrades, mixing with new noise, and static. In addition to loss, the recording also asks us to consider what is noise, as the wind and the trees compete with the sounds of traffic.&nbsp; The work includes a video visualization made by uploading, downloading, and re-uploading the download of a video of the trees to YouTube. My microscopic documentation yielded some pretty incredible, otherworldly visuals – at once primordial and futuristic, an elastic sense of time for an organism that can carry us to the deep past and far future Incredibly, this organism&nbsp;is used by scientists to inform their search for dark matter.&nbsp; I created a set of cloth prints from these images which can be used to wrap and hold item&nbsp;like citrus that tend to mold. These cloths are an attempt to recontextualize mold, an undesirable outcome when storing food, and form a new appreciation for its intelligence, functionality, and even beauty. How might moss tell a story to us? Text offers a way of sharing histories and narratives, passing them from one to another. Moss Bound imagines a material method through which we can tell and receive these stories. Reading with moss is a way of considering rhythm, sequence, and time.&nbsp;A physical rebinding and reformingof the Iliad&nbsp;through the use of seven threads, mirroring Homer’s rupturous and rapturous seven-beat rhythm, mapping the occasion of seven words shared by moss and human: time, place, earth, rock, dissolve, together, flow. The cords thread the book, gathering and binding the text, obscuring some pages, and displaying others. Together with moss, an alternative reading, history, and marking of time are made possible.
