I am Sitting with the Trees is a remix of Alvin Lucier’s I am Sitting in a Room (1969), situated in East River Park, in one of the last standing groves of pin oaks following mass tree removal. The work speaks to this loss, as the sound of the recording degrades, mixing with new noise, and static. In addition to loss, the recording also asks us to consider what is noise, as the wind and the trees compete with the sounds of traffic.
The work includes a video visualization made by uploading, downloading, and re-uploading the download of a video of the trees to YouTube. The pixelated video mirrors the noise of the audio.
